Bulgaria's active role in the activities of the Universal Postal Union has received high recognition, said the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Georgi Todorov on the election of our country for a member of the Postal Operations Council of the UPU. At the 27th Congress of the Union, which was held from 9 to 27 August 2021 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, our candidacy received the maximum number of votes in the Eastern Europe and North Asia geographical group.
The Universal Postal Union is one of the oldest international organizations. It was established in 1874 and since 1948 has had the status of a specialized agency within the United Nations, specialized in the field of postal services. Bulgaria was one of the first countries in the world to join the organization in 1879.
The membership in the Council is carried out through Bulgarian Posts EAD and will enable our country to participate directly in the management of the Union on all issues related to the operation of postal services.
