Commercial operation of Alexandroupolis LNG Terminal begins

The liquefied natural gas terminal at the Greek city of Alexandroupolis is already in commercial operation, the Greek company Gastrade said. Bulgaria's Bulgartransgaz is a shareholder in the terminal with 20%.

Besides the Bulgarian company, strategic partners and shareholders are Elmina Kopeluzu, Gaslog, DEPA Commercial and DESFA.

The start of commercial operation of the new infrastructure marks an important milestone for the development and energy security of Europe, Gastrade points out. The volumes from the terminal can provide natural gas supplies to Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, North Macedonia and Serbia, to Moldova and Ukraine in the east, and to Hungary and Slovakia in the northwest.

The facility uses state-of-the-art technology and has a maximum regasification capacity of 5.5 billion cubic meters per year. Already, 14 Greek and international companies are commercially involved in the project, having booked almost the entire capacity of the terminal until at least 2030.  The facility is designed, built and run by Gastrade.
