Cabinet officially sets Jan. 1, 2025 as target date for Eurozone entry

The government officially set January 1, 2025, as the target date for the euro changeover. That was done through revisions to a 2015 government ordinance relating to the preparation for entry in the eurozone, which were made public by the government press service.

The previous target date was at the beginning of 2024 but in September 2023 it became clear that the government would be moving it by a year.

The revisions in the ordinance also fine-tune the functions of the council in charge of preparing the accession to the eurozone, and make changes in the leadership of some working groups with the coordination council.

The government press service says that the revisions to the ordinance aim to step up work "on the real practical preparation of Bulgaria for the euro changeover with a view to accomplishing the goal of joining the eurozone as of January 1, 2025".
