Bulgaria retains 38th position in UN's Global Innovation Index 2024 (GII)

Bulgaria retains its 38th position in the Global Innovation Index 2024 (GII), the annual UN ranking of the most innovative economies in the world.

The GII is divided into two sub-indexes, Input and Output, both of which have equal weight in the GII formation. In 2024, Bulgaria ranks 50th for the Input sub-index and 32nd for the Output sub-index.

In this ranking, for the 14th time in a row, Switzerland ranks first, ahead of Sweden and the USA.

In 2024, South Korea registered the biggest surge, climbing from tenth to sixth place in one year. This puts it ahead of Finland, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark in the ranking, according to the index. This is happening against a gloomy global backdrop and a decrease in Research and Development investment.

The GII ranks 133 countries according to their capacity to innovate and is published annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization.
