“For seven years in a row, BCCI has been supporting this forum because Bulgarian wines are one of the symbols of Bulgaria. Wine is a product that brings the glory of Bulgaria all over the world,” said BCCI’s Secretary General Vasil Todorov during a press-conference at the Chamber held on the occasion of the upcoming 7th edition of the Balkans International Wine Competition (BIWC), which will be opened on 19 May, 11:30 a.m. in Grand Hotel Sofia.
“I hope that by supporting this event we will once again draw the attention of the Bulgarian public and foreign guests to the high quality Bulgarian wines, and not only to Bulgarian, as the programme of the event includes the presentation of wines from many Balkan countries,” Mr. Todorov added.
“This year we have a record in the number of registered wines for the competition – nearly 700. This brings us closer to the world wine competitions,” said Galina Niforu, Director of BIWC. She added that 70 exhibitors are expected this year. In addition to top Bulgarian companies, 20 wine cellars – exhibitors from the Balkan countries will also take part in the event, as well as 30 wine importers, and journalists from the USA, China and Japan.
Important changes have been made in this year’s competition regulations. The rating system has changed – from a 20-point to a 100-point quality scale, and one more medal – a double gold medal, has been added. This will help the judges make a more accurate assessment. Moreover, the competing cellars will thus be able to better promote their wines, because the 100-point scale is better known worldwide.
Konstantinos Lazarakis, Chairman of the BIWC Jury and the first Master of Wines on the Balkans and Southeastern Europe, Nina Filipova from the Executive Agency on Vine and Wine, and other officials also attended the press-conference.
This year, BIWC will continue to promote its worldwide campaign #winelover against cancer.
By registering on the BIWC website you can receive two-day access to the event.
